Why Get a Flu Shot?

The flu virus changes every year, so the flu shot needs to be updated too. Getting a flu shot each year gives you the best defence against the latest strains. Flu symptoms can come on fast and make you feel miserable with a fever, chills, aches, coughs, and more. Plus, the flu can easily spread, especially during winter.

Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

We recommend everyone over 6 months old gets a flu shot every year. It's especially important for those at higher risk of serious flu complications, like:

  • Adults 65 and over

  • People with long-term health conditions (diabetes, asthma, heart problems, etc.)

  • Pregnant people

  • Young children (especially those with breathing problems)

  • People with mental health conditions

Is the Flu Shot Free?

The good news is the flu shot is FREE for many people in New Zealand, including those listed above. The funded vaccine for everyone over 6 months is called Influvac Tetra. We can let you know if you qualify for a free flu shot.

What if I Need to Pay?

If you don't qualify for a free flu shot, it's still a worthwhile investment in your health! At Bradburns Pharmacy, the flu shot is only $28.

What About Side Effects?

Like most medications, the flu shot can cause some mild reactions, like a sore arm or a low fever. This is just your body's natural response to building immunity. These side effects usually only last a day or two.

Serious Allergic Reactions?

Serious allergic reactions to the flu shot are extremely rare. Our pharmacists are trained to spot any potential issues and can treat them quickly if needed.
